The honeymoon is over, your gifts are unwrapped, your gown is preserved and packed away and the reality of married life has set upon you. Marriage is a lifetime commitment and every couple has it’s ups and downs. Why not make a wedding time capsule to commemorate your special day so you can reminisce together well after the magic has faded.
1 of 5: Choose Your Container
When choosing your wedding time capsule, you may opt for the traditional metal time capsule or you can select an antique or engraved wooden box, or trunk, complete with a key and lock. But whatever you finally agree upon, you must make sure it is large enough to hold items such as invitations, wine glasses, photos and other such wedding memorabilia.
2 of 5: Capsule Storage
We strongly recommend that you do NOT bury your wedding time capsule underground as this will expose it to the elements and thus cause damage. You may wish to display it elegantly in your new home, or perhaps store it in a cool, dry place, such as a cabinet or dresser drawer. But most importantly, DO NOT FORGET where you have stored your capsule!
3 of 5: Plan Ahead
Prior to the wedding, you should both compile a list of items you would like to see included in your wedding time capsule. Perhaps you can each compose a letter declaring your undying love as a reminder of why you chose to wed in the first place. You can invite guests to write little notes to you as well, or donate wedding photos shortly after the ceremony. Don’t procrastinate, you don’t want to wait til the last minute and leave something out.
4 of 5: Designate An “Open Date”
This is entirely up to you, but don’t wait too long, as you can become so involved with everyday life that it slips your mind that you even made a wedding time capsule. You can decide if you want to open it after your first big fight or even on your five-year anniversary. Whatever date you chose, make it a special occasion marked with romance and passion.
5 of 5: Select Items For Your Time Capsule
Be creative and have fun when determining what items you wish to include in your wedding time capsule. Choose items unique and special to you and your spouse. Below are just a few suggestions, feel free to improvise.
- A framed wedding invitation
- A copy of your wedding vows
- A CD of your favorite songs from your reception
- A copy of your guest registry
- A bottle of wine or champagne from your reception
- Ticket stubs from your honeymoon
- A newspaper from your wedding day
- The wedding program
- Photos from your wedding and honeymoon
- Sealed love letters to each other.
- Wedding cake topper
- A personalized napkin or matchbook from the wedding
- Foreign currency from your honeymoon
- Copy of your marriage certificate
- Wedding favors
Personalize your wedding time capsule however you would like so that one day you can look back and remember all the reasons why you said “I do.”
